With God on our side we hoped that we would be coming home with our new South Poll bull.
We aren’t the type to drop everything to attend a bull sale multiple states away and spend thousands of dollars on a bull for our farm. This was a long thought out decision that we had been debating for years. The process started in the Summer of 2020 when we sold our head herd bull. He was a Charolais and had been born and raised on our farm while Ryan’s dad was managing things. He was our dominant bull and wasn’t throwing characteristics that we wanted in our herd long term.
Don’t get me wrong. He gave us live calves and that’s all that matters. But for the longevity of our herd we needed something new, we needed something different.
We bought our first South Poll back in 2018 and fell in love with the breed instantly. In 2019 we bought our first South Poll bull Okie from a farmer down in Oklahoma. We had been looking for a new bull to replace our Charolais bull for a while and finally decided that going for the best genetics we could would benefit us in the long run
Okay now back to the real story of getting our new bull.
Why Pharo Cattle Company?
Pharo Cattle Company is based out of Colorado and is very well know for premiere genetics in grass efficiency. This sale specifically had heat tolerant bulls. There were multiple South Polls being sold & a few composite breeds with Barzona mix that Ryan was interested in. Our research on these bulls started weeks before the sale. Ryan used PCC’s awesome system to refine his search to bulls that we were interested in.
We had nothing to lose.
The other reason Ryan was interested in traveling 15+ hours to Alabama was because a month prior he had stumbled upon a guy who was selling part of his pure bred Barzona cattle. This farmer and the sale were 30 minutes away from each other. He could check out the cattle to see if we were interested in buying a few and also hit up the sale. If we didn’t come home with a bull at least the trip wasn’t all for nothing.
Time for the sale.
That morning I had barely spoken to Ryan. He had breakfast with the farmer that he was staying with and they were going to check out his Barzona heifers then he was headed to the sale. It was a busy morning for him but our nerves were settled because we had our plan. We had our bulls selected and prices set. Ryan was to just go down the list and stick to it.
Our Alabama Bull Sale YouTube Video
Was he able to pull it off?
At this point I was at home watching the bull sale live on the internet and hadn’t talked to Ryan so I had no idea what our bidding number was! Which made it more nerve racking and fun at the same time! As the sale went on bulls were being sold at the numbers we had set but which one was ours?! The sale finished and in my heart I knew we had gotten one.
The underdog came through.
I say underdog because we were out of our league at this sale. Some bulls went for almost double our budget. Ryan had traveled all the way there in our mini van because we knew our truck and trailer wouldn’t make it that long of a trip. It was a leap of faith for Ryan to spend the time and energy to go all the way there hoping we would get a bull. But with God on our side we were coming home with a bull.
